Temping? 2 Jobs? Part time? Thoughts?

Hi,

Today, the smoke was lifted from my screen of vision, I realised that I was chasing something in retail that I was never going to get back, Sainsburys was purely circumstance rather than the answer to anything, it was just a job when i was younger that i enjoyed, from now on, it is not mentioned! :j

Basically, today I started at Smiths, and by 2 p.m I had left after spending my dinner hour going around job agencies in my town and booking loads of 1-2-1's for Weds and Thursday to speak about my options, a lot said they had positions waiting to be filled, the money may not be great ditto with the actual work, but whilst I am deciding what to do, I can just do 3 days a week and build it up from then after my issues.

I know some people may say that this is the wrong thing to have done, but I was going to stay at Smiths till i sorted out myself with a new role but sadly I have that many people to see this week it just makes sense to make a clean break.

My long term plan is college / Uni in September, however I need to pay off my debts and then sort out my cash whilst keeping my stress in check and ensuring that I make sure that I look after myself. I was concerned that if i stayed at Smiths I could have taken a slump again.

What are your thoughts on the temporary work? Has anyone done it before? what about part time work? an evening job?

My intention is to start with 3 days and build it up, ideally get a job in IT or customer service or data entry, whilst I am going through this phase of just wanting money and not really knowing what to do, temp'ing offers the best route out.

I hope people understand :)

to be honest, anyone who remembers you hun is gonna be hard pushed to understand you on this one.

    Even I dont understand!

I would try and offer you some advice but I worry you're not going to listen. I'll confess as someone who has had many conversations with you about what you're doing, Im disappointed.

    Dear Learning to drive

I have been through similar experiences to you I think. I suffered from bad depression some years ago. It took me a good couple of years to recover. During recovery I'm afraid I took a similar path - getting jobs, leaving jobs, thinking something better is around the corner - the painful truth is that you may not be ready to go back to work yet. Do you suffer from panic attacks? and were you scared of going back to Smiths. You need to take care of yourself. As for temping - it sucks. All agencies say they have lots on the books to tempt you into the agency. I did all this. Loads of 1:1 interviews which came to nothing. Maybe going back to college is the right thing for you. Retrain - try to focus on something.

    Hi,

been to Brook St. today to ask about work and It looks as though I am set to go into IT with Thomas Cook, either way I have some very good skills apparently, such as typing, word and excel skills. Its a full time role which isnt ideal but I have to get back into full time work as soon as possible really.

Hi been to another agency today, after going to the jobseekers man he gave me 4 places to call for a role too. I will ring them tomorrow, both agencies have been very impressed with my I.T. skills i.e. typing etc so its positive, and perhaps will open a door into IT that I couldnt have got otherwise.

I've worked as a temp for... three years? I love it. Temping gets such a bad rap, but it can actually be a great stopgap job. When I graduate this summer, I'm starting a proper full time job for a well known graduate employer, and I'm going to miss the flexibility of temp work...

Most people try to sign up with lots of different temping agencies - I think this is a bad move. Pick one - the best one! - and be loyal to them. Loyalty is always rewarded. You'll start off with a couple of deadly dull assignments, but do them well, the agency will love you, and when you become of their 'reliable' temps who always turn up and do the job well, you'll start getting offered the better assignments.

Always maintain an honest relationship with your temping agency - be nice to them, they'll be nice to you.

Temping isn't for everyone - I've been sent to cover for sick leave somewhere in the morning, then been pulled out to cover a more complicated assignment elsewhere and have another temp cover for me covering for the sick employee, and been ferried over to a different town by taxi. It can be chaotic, unpredictable, etc... But I thrive on that sort of environment.

You build up so many skills - how to rapidly develop working relationships, how to absorb new facts and skills quickly, etc, etc.

The money isn't good enough to justify being a temp forever, but if you're looking for a stop gap whilst you ponder more long term plans, it's not a bad move. The kind of transferable skills you gain are great for talking about at job interview for more permanent work. :)
