Debit Collectors

Hello All I am a newbie. My son has split up with his wife and they have a home together. Their house is being rented out and his wife is opening all the mail and redirecting all the post to him at our address.

We decided to give him a room in our house rather than seeing him chucked out on the street.

We are lucky as we are totally debit free and pay our credit cards on time and owe no money. As I said earlier his wife has opened all his letters and directing all mail to our address and 90% of them are letters from debit collecting agencys according to the return addresses.

He is suffering from severe depression and in his bedroom is a rather large pile of unopened letters.

We are worried that debit collectors will soon be calling at our door. As the house and all the contents are ours and in our name and all our son has is clothes, what can we do and say once they start calling at our door.

Any advice would be appreciated

thank you

If a debt collector knocks on the door, tell him your son will comunicate in writting only and then politely ask him to leave. Try not to worry, a debt collecter can not take anything.

You should go through the pile of mail with him to make sure there is no court papers. You can get more advice from one of the free debt charities.

Debt collectors couldn't take any possessions from son even if he had any. Debt collectors have no powers to take anything whatsoever.

What is he doing about tackling his debts? is he earning? I would suggest you point him in the direction of one of the debt advice charities. Things will only get worse for him if he doesn't face up to his debts.

Even if he can only afford token payments towards his debt, this is far better than ignoring things altogether.

Has he been to see his GP or someone about his depression.

If he needs a bit of a 'stick' to get himself sorted then maybe tell him he can only stay if he starts to tackle his debts.
If he needs a 'carrot' could you tell him you'll help him seek advice and help him find a way out of his current situation.

Debt advice charities - IMPORTANT - Where to seek professional impartial advice about your debts.

How is suffering from depression a sign of using cannabis, he has just broken up with his wife he prob isnt in a place to deal with the debt issues just now. I know exactly where he is at, having been there myself, and no i wasnt using cannabis either.

Unless you can say something constructive dont say anything at all
