Council tax debt...BPO Collections

I will be in a position to pay this debt soon but received this letter from BPO saying "...intention to pass this a/c to Sheriff Officers for further action which may include; earnings arrestment
deduction of benefits
freezing bank accounts
Are they liable to do this or is this a frightener? When I do pay, I want to pay Glasgow City Council itself, not BPO...can I do this? Can I just ignore this for the time being (should be able to pay in a few months) or is it likely that they will do this soon? I do not want sheriff officers at my door.

Has a liability order been granted yet ?I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

If a liability order has been granted, I have not been informed.0

Some council's in E&W will use debt collectors prior to issuing a court summons, I would be surprised if some Scottish council's aren't trying the same.
The debt collection companies will usually refer anything they fail to collect back to the council and they will decide whether to go for the court.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. I used to work for BPO Collections! I can tell you this now..BPO will not nor will they ever refer your account to a Sheriff Officer, nor will they attempt to take you to court over the matter. They will tell you this to try and scare you into calling them. BPO will send you normally 3 letters after that they will send the account to a tracing company who will attempt to confirm if you have moved address and also find a telephone number. If they find your number they will call you daily sometimes 2 or 3 times. If this happens all you need to do is call them up, tell them you WANT TO REMOVE THE NUMBER. The agent you speak to on the phone will have to this under company policy. Your account will then sit with BPO for a around 6 months then they will send it back to GCC. It is then upto the council how they proceed, chances are they will pass it to Scott&Co who will do the exact same as BPO.
There is absolutely nothing to stop you from paying GCC Direct. All it does knock the commission rate BPO will get for the account.

If so, you need specialist advice as most people here know the law in E&W.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
