Sending a cheque to HMRC for self assessment

Not sure if my father can pay all of his bill via Faster Payments - it is 40K and most banks have a limit of £10K
If he sends HMRC a cheque tomorrow they will receive it on Thursday - is that enough or does it have to clear into their account by Thursday?

It has to be cleared funds.
Can he do a CHAPS payment ? (It will cot him to make the payment but its the only certain way to make sure its in HMRC`s coffers on the due date).0 -

I have just made a payment of a similar amount by faster payment without problem (not for me I might add) - has the op tried before deciding upon a cheque?0
