Problem with boss who complains about heating being on

Just really want to see what people think. I work in an open plan office ...approx 50ft x 20ft on a second floor with stairs leading onto the office so no doors to keep the heat in. We have three air conditioned units of which usually one is on..temp set at 21oC.....on really cold days we ask for a second one to be turned on. The units are temperature controlled so they are not chucking out heat just for the sake of it. The boss controls the remote control and keeps it in his office and is continually saying its hot and turns them off. Getting fed up to be honest. Can he do this?

Yes he can. The law doesn't state a minimum temperature but only that it should be "reasonable".

I would define "reasonable" as being the same temperature as his office.

I used to work for someone like that. It was a smaller office but he hated putting the heating on and reckoned the meter was whizzing around if we protested. In the end we used to sit in our hats, coats and wear fingerless gloves and he got the message.

He was still a skinflint but agreed to short bursts of heat throughout the day - a compromise :j

I also used to work for a tight boss. He once complained that we were using too much toilet roll. He told us that toilet roll was a priviledge and if we didn't stop abusing it then he would stop providing it :rotfl:

your boss has to pay your wages probably so this is why he needs to keep costs down. Could you wear a jumper perhaps

His office, which has a door presumably so he cannot feel the same draft that you do!!!

I think "reasonable" as a guideline is 16oC but this is not set in stone and cannot be enforced.
