K tax code, received rebate but still K code

in Cutting tax
Hi
Wondering if someone can explain this to me! I used to work full time and received a salary of approximately £30K. I then went on maternity leave in 2010 and returned to work Sept 2011 part-time. For the last two years my P60 has a tax code of K29 which I assumed was correct (I was busy with baby so to be fair wasn't really paying that much attention).
About August last year I receive a letter from tax man saying I'd paid too much tax in the last 2 years and here's a cheque for over £2000 with their calculations (which "look" right).
But, I'm still on tax code K29 - is this correct as, if I've paid too much tax the last 2 years on that code, will I be paying too much tax this year as well?
I have no other source of income other than my part-time job. I employ the childcare voucher scheme so £243 a month, my pension contributions are normally about £132.08 with basic salary £1971.37pm for a 23hr week (where I had worked 35 hours).
I've read and re-read the online stuff and am just confusing myself more every time I read it!!
so,
1) Is the tax code correct?
2) If not, what code should I be on?
3) Will I receive a rebate for this year?
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks!

1) Is the tax code correct?
No. A K code indicates that you have no tax-free allowances and that you have an extra amount that needs taxed. So a K29 code would mean that they add an extra £295 onto your salary and give you no tax-free personal allowance.2) If not, what code should I be on?
The normal tax code for this year is 810L. You have childcare vouchers which may change your tax code.3) Will I receive a rebate for this year?
Quite probably.
You should really phone HMRC and explain your circumstances and ask them to review your tax code and issue a correct one. If it's done before March's payment you will get any rebated due automatically which is better than waiting until the new tax year.
What was the explanation for the K code in the first place?0 -
There wasn't one that I can recall but as I was off on maternity when it seemed to changed, its a bit of a blur (sleep deprivation does weird things to your brain :rotfl: ).
Didn't want to call them in case they'd made a mistake with the rebate they had issued and tried to claw it back from my salary but will give them a call tomorrow (if I can get through to a human and my daughter remains quiet enough for me to hear the conversation!).
Thanks for replying as didn't think it was right but just wanted to make sure I wasn't being stupid and missing something obvious!0 -
Unless you like the sound of an engaged tone, don't bother tomorrow,
Its self assessment deadline day, the busiest day of the year for income tax offices. Call next week, when there's a lull between deadline day and penalty issue day. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -

In your position I would write rather than ring. Keep a copy and send recorded delivery.0 -
Thanks for the heads up with the phone tho daughter refusing to go to sleep anyway so was unlikely I'd have been able to call anyway. I can phone from the office start of next week though (or draft a letter).

I would perservere with trying to call them directly. If you send a letter it will be about 4 weeks before it's worked taking you to the end of February and by the time a new 12/13 code gets to your employer it might be too late for the March payroll run. If you get through to them on the phone the code will be with you and your employer within 2 weeks. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
