Am I about to get rogered by HMRC?

So, leaving everything to the last minute like I have a habit of doing, I have just sat down to complete my self assessment and now discover that I don't yet have a "gateway" login or password in order to do it... and "it can take 2 weeks" for them to arrive. Do we have any HMRC insiders here that can advise me on the best course of action in this situation or am I doomed for a royal rogering of £100 + £10 per day for every day it takes to arrive? If it makes any difference my earnings for that tax year were only about £6500 so I don't think there's any tax due.

TIA. :(

I think there is software you can purchase/download and do it through that, have a look on their website and dig about on here. The fines still apply even if you do not owe any tax so get your finger out.

In the time available, if you have a UTR anyone with tax software can submit a tax return on your behalf. Unfortunately even for someone with simple affairs, accountants like myself can't really go any lower than £100 plus VAT due to anti-moneylaundering regulations and all the rest of it.

Taxcalc is the software I use and it is excellent. I don't know the cost for a one-off usage as I submit several hundred returns per year. There are other packages, as you've found out the HMRC one is the only really rubbish one.

If you don't want to waste your money on taxcalc etc, then apply for the login despite the fact the deadline is on Thursday and you won't get it in time.

Why should I do that you may ask, and risk being hit by a fine.

We'll, if you apply for the login before the deadline, then HMRC will accept that you have a reasonable excuse for filing the return late and will provide an extension to the deadline until the 15th February.

So get online and request that ID number before COP 31/01/2013

Thanks. I belled them up yesterday and explained the issue. Did exactly as you said dorio and gave me a 2 week extension. :)
