Marriage and Debts

Quick Question

If you get married what liability is there for your new spouse's debts if theyre not secured and only in thier name?

    As long as they're not joint debts you're not liable even if you're married.

    There is no liability for consumer debts, although I believe they would be liable for council tax debts. However, should the partner with the debts die then the creditors would be paid from the deceased' estate, should there be enough.

    If not it is possible that you could be made to sell your home (wh you should get life insurance) due to an 'Insolvency Administration Order'! Apparently! :p

    As stated, there is no liability to pay the OH's debts as long as they are in their name only. However, were you to ever open a joint account & your OH broke any repayment contracts such as DMP, IVA etc then your credit file could well be adversely affected.
    Donedoingdebt Lightbulb moment January 2000. Debt at highest approx £102,000. Debt now (October 2009 - absolutely fork all!!!):beer:
