Cleaning a mortar and pestle

Hi everyone
I was wondering if anyone could help me with the above.
I have a clay (I think) mortar and pestle - it's definitely not stone.
Yesterday I did something really stupid and ground some anchovies in it for a salad dressing. I didn't clean it out until this evening and, no surprise, it still stinks of fish. Any idea how I can clean it so that the smell goes or at least, isn't as strong?
Thanks very much

Not sure but You could perhaps try bicarbonate of soda and a fresh lemon? I am sure someone will be along with a better answer!2019, move forward with positivity! I am the opposite of Eyeore :rotfl:0

I have cleaned mine using a dish washer tablet. I actually wanted to grind a tablet for soaking something else, but found that grinding the tablet also cleaned the mortar and pestel as well. lol
as Eyeore said, grinding some bicarb and a drop of lemon would prob work.....today's mood is brought to you by coffee, lack of sleep and idiots.

but if it's unglazed clay, it might absorb some of the chemicals from the tablet? I think the bicarb may be better to try first.0

Pound half a lemon so it is mush then tip out and wipe. Put in some cooking salt and give it a bash. the lemon should lift the oil and the salt will dry the juice? Worth a go.0
