Two separate tickets - not getting off the train?

Got a return ticket but now it's looking like it would be better on the return journey to get the train to the next station - if I buy a ticket that covers me from X (original station) to Y (further station) on the same train would that be OK or would I have to get off the train and wait for the next one (an hour later)?

  • I think the only stipulation is that the train MUST STOP at that station (where your ticket splits) you don't need to get off / on.
  • Thanks the train would stop at the station.

There are some circumstances where the train doesn;t even have to stop, for example where one ticket is a season ticket and one isn't. But it sounds like you'll be fine with two regular tickets as long as the train stops. Make sure when you buy the second ticket that there aren't any time restrictions on its use etc.
    Can I help?

You don't have to get off.

It may also be possible to get your ticket excessed. In some cases, depending on the journey you have booked, the cost of this may be zero.

What is the actual ticket do you have - what does it say on it?
  • I've got an advance ticket so probably can't change it. It only costs £2 for the extra ticket for the extra stop anyway, just wanted to make sure I wasn't breaking any rules. I take it I show both tickets when the conductor comes around?

You seem to be changing your story about what tickets you've got - in post one it's a return ticket, in post 6 it's an advance ticket. Advance tickets are single only, there are no advance returns.

Anyhow if you have an advance (single) ticket from A to B and you wish to carry on to C from B and the train stops at B, you need to buy a single ticket from B to C. I'd just show the ticket for the leg of the journey I was on - and the other one only if challenged
  • Sorry I used the word return to mean I'm leaving from and returning to the same station. I booked the tickets together.
