GO has a job to do, and giving Aussie backpackers in the UK a pension isn't one of them.

So, you can come back and put in 5 years later in your life, or make 5 years voluntary contribs. That is your choice.

I have a state pension from the USA for working there 11 years (would have been nothing if I had worked for less than 10) and the OH has a small state pension in Jersey for working there 7 years (you don't get one for less than 5).

A time limit for contribs is kinda normal.

Unfortunately I'm counting the 3 auto-credit years in the 5. As I said, fairly young!

Actually, it occurs to me I might be treated as if I'm one of George Osborne's "Aussie backpackers" that he's so desperate to de-pension.

Whilst concern about a pension is admirable you are pretty young to be worrying about this currently, if I were you I'd follow my own path for a few years and think about this when you have more idea of what you want to do.

If my head wasn't hurting before, it sure is now!

Yes it is a bit confusing ...

New Zealand Super currently pays a gross weekly pension to a single person of £212 at present exchange rates, and requires only 10 years residence in NZ over the age of 20, 5 of which must be over the age of 50. This is however reduced by any UK pension you receive, so there is no present benefit in additional voluntary contribution to the UK if you think it likely you will become a permanent NZ resident (and potentially a citizen at some stage).
