Paying too much tax.

I’ve been in employment for 3 months now as an apprentice earning less than £450 a month.
I have been emergency taxed on my wages for the 3rd month running roughly taxed £80 a time, give or take. (Meaning I pick up roughly £350, again give or take)
I didn’t think I could be taxed when earning such a little amount.
Why am I being taxed?
Who do I contact?
Can I get my money back (if I’m right and shouldn’t be taxed)?
How long would it take?

what were you doing before the employment .. were you claiming JSA?
what is the taxcode on your payslip.0 -
Wasn't allowed to claim JSA, due to quitting Uni, in my second year.0

Phone your tax office, and ask them to issue your employer with an updated tax code. That should get it sorted with all the tax paid back in next months pay. Do this fast because once March has been paid, you'll probably have to reclaim the tax which will take longer.Adventure before Dementia!0

Ok sound slike you are on a OT tax code as you are paying 20% on the whole amount.I didn’t think I could be taxed when earning such a little amount.
If you were on a proper 810L tax code you wouldn't be.Why am I being taxed?
Probably because you haven't completed a P46 when you started work.Who do I contact?

You should have been given a P46 by your employer to complete when you started work.
Now it's probably quickest to phone up HMRC and ask to be put on a proper tax code. If it's used by your employer before March you'll get your refund right away. If not you will have to wait a few months after the end of the tax year in April.0 -
If your tax code is 810L, does this mean you shouldn't get taxed at all?0

My tax code is 810 L, so I shouldn't be being taxed at all?0

On 810L, you shouldn't be paying any tax so your employer is working it out wrong. It maybe that they are doing it across a number of employees and being lazy so not realising that you don't get any tax deducted.
Either way if you are on that code, its right and you shouldn't be paying tax so you need to talk to the payroll people.Adventure before Dementia!0
