Will I Receive My Re-Issued Tax Refund

Hey,

I'm owed several hundred pounds in a tax refund which dates back to 2010. I wasn't aware I was due a refund until 2 or 3 weeks ago so I called up the tax office to query it and they claimed it was sent out in November 2011 which I obviously did not receive so the guy said he would forward it to a different department who would investigate & re-issue the cheque and gave me a turn around of 2 months.

I asked for a reference number or if he could follow that up in writing to which kinda threw him off and said he could give me his name. I don't know but the whole process seemed kinda informal/casual like he was saying yeah what ever sit back and wait a few months to see if a cheque appears.. I questioned why it would take 2 months and he said that was the given estimate time it could be earlier but still 2 months ?

Clearly put my tax refund on the lowest priority and how can they be sure that it'll actually arrive this time ? It's been two weeks since I first rang them but should I ring them up and ask for a status update ? :)

I know it's hard to answer if I'll receive it but I'm just wondering are they fobbing me off or is this normal practice ?

thanks

I would guess because they have to check that it hasnt been cashed by someone else !.

I would suggest you write to them and give your bank details, so next time you the money will get paid direct to your bank account and you wont have to worry about this again.

Really 2 weeks is nothing in HMRC time, the request is probably still in the internal mail between the chap you spoke to and the department who will deal with it. You'd probably be looking at 2 months before they'd do anything about escalating it. However, it can't hurt to call, apart from taking your time and the cost of the call, and you never know, it might hurry them up.
