Worried - Brother wants to go abroad with debt?!

Hi,
I am hoping to get some advice that I can pass on to my brother. He is in a mess with debt and has come to the point where him and friend both want to travel to europe as he is of the feeling that there is nothing here for him apart from money worries!!
I am really worried about the trouble he could get into if he was to leave his debts behind and if he flew back into the country whether he would get caught out at this point and be in even more trouble.
I have tried to talk to him about maybe going bankrupt if he feels he really cant carry on with this before he skipd the country to find his 'better life'.
I was hoping for some advice and views as to what could happen if he does this or any advice of maybe what he can do to make things more above board as he isn't really into listening to his younger sister!!
Thanks

I think he needs to sit down and realise how serious this is. Skipping the country wont sort his problems out.
In fact say he hates living abroad and wants to some back the UK he will struggle to get basic things like debit cards and obviously the bigger things like mortgages etc.
Try tell him this again. But you cant help someone who doesnt want help. Just be a good sister and help him see the error of his ways.
I think your doing a lot of the worrying for him and thats a lovely site to see. ((hug))) to you xIsn't the knowledge that comes from experience more valuable than the knowledge that doesn't?0 -

Thank you, and you're right sometimes it doesn't matter how many times you try to tell some one!
The problem is he cant get credit any longer because of his credit score so feels that it makes no difference if he isn't able to get i for another 6 years. I would just hate to see him get in a whole load of trouble over it!! xI am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. It sounds like he'd have little to lose by going bankrupt. Have you thought of asking for advice on the Bankruptcy Board? There're many helpful people there with a great deal of experience.0

I didnt think of that however if he wanted to venture to places like USA would bankruptcy not deny him that?Isn't the knowledge that comes from experience more valuable than the knowledge that doesn't?0

It wouldn't stop him travelling there, although it might be worth checking if it would stop him getting a work permit there or being able to live there permanently (if that's what he's wanting to do).
This link has info from the Payplan website about dealing with UK debts whilst living abroad - there might be something on there that will help him."I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250 -

If he can't get credit over here, may not be able to get any overseas either. Travelling around picking up casual jobs without any backup is likely to get a bit hard outside the tourist seasons.0

Thanks everyone for your help, I spoke to him again last night and he has now told me that he has an IVA for about 20k.
I understand that he feels he is putting his life on hold because of these debts and feels he will miss out on things because he is tied here because of the debts. I just think he could end up in a whole lot of mess!I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. if he is into an IVA and it fails then who ever is administrating the IVA will apply to the court to make him bankrupt.Tell him to be very carefull.
