converting a very 80s-cut silk shirt

Hello,
A friend of mine recently gifted me a beautiful red silk blouse that doesn't fit her anymore.
It's beautiful quality fabric, and I could use smart blouses for work, but the cut of it looks terrible on me. It's a very 80s style: with shoulder pads, a man-tailored sort of collar, and a boxy shape in the waist. Even in the actual 80s I looked terrible in that sort of cut--it just makes me look awkward and lanky.
I wonder if anyone has some ideas on how to update it? I thought maybe I could take out the shoulder pads--maybe sew some darts into the waist? Any other ideas? I'd like to just update it with a sleeker fit.
