Get a decent one and they are great.
We bought a heavy duty Polti in Makro about 15 years ago and it's still going strong. I used it for years to clean rental properties, as well as our own house and that of friends, and you get tired before it does.
The cheaper ones have a low wattage heater, so you have to wait on them generating the steam whilst you're working.
Just my tuppence worth.

I would second the Polti brand, but they are quite expensive. My mother got one from Lakeland which was only around £60 and she is really happy with it.0

My friend got one from Lakeland but it was £120 She says her floors have never looked as clean! Its even cleaned the grout in between tiles back to white :j0

Which magazine have a review of steam cleaners. See this link ;

Personally, I think Which is over priced but you can sign up for a trial costing £1 then cancel your subscription.
I bought a VAX cleaner about a year ago and wouldn't buy another. Check if it continuously produces steam, otherwise you spend more time waiting on the water heating.
I noticed in an TV advert for one cleaner that in small print it says that the steam has to be applied to the spot for at least 5 seconds in order to kill bacteria.

i have a shark and used to love it but lately, once the floor dries, it leaves a sort of powdery residue ?
not sure if it is limescale but have gone back to a good old fashioned mop and bucket full of soapy water0 -
I have a vax steam cleaner and my mum has the steam mop upright one, both are very good. However mine has recently started to be temperamental and sometimes leaks water out of the part where hose joins machine. It also shoots out a lot of water occasionally and really soaks the floor

Wife got a steam mop from ebay,cant remember the make but it was cheap about £35 and there was a reason it was cheap,looked like a childs toy when out of the box with thin cheap plastic and first time it was filled it leaked all over the floor as it relied on the weight of the water in the tank to hold it in place.
It went to the bin as the cost of returning it was almost half the cost of buying.She saw the adverts for the steam ultra on tv and bought one at I think £80 but its in a different league.
When you take it out of the box everything snaps together with precision and it really heats up fast and holds the steam.Only point id make is the mops that come with it are very thin and dont last long before needing washed so bought different ones on ebay for £9 which are really quality clean far longer and better.
They all say you can use tap water but depending on your area it may be hard water so wife would boil a kettle of water let it cool and keep it in a flask.They are really good on tiled and hardwood sealed floors and dry in minutes,I see a new on think its a vax? on sale at I believe £99 which uses detergent in it also but if the steam mop works as it should you wont need detergent.0 -
