Hi My 16 year old son works part time, he has paid about £700 in tax this year but is below the taxable earnings threshold. How does he go about getting this back? Thanks.

Self Assesment!? Seems so obvious I was thinking it is a trick question....You fill in the form, they do the calculation and send you a cheque if you paid to much and a demand if you didn't pay enough....

Alternatively get the employer to apply the correct tax code and it will be done via PAYE and stop him from paying more and having to claim it back...There is the risk though that if the situation changes and the tax-code has not he might end up having to pay....

Actually a simple letter to the Tax Office (details on the payslip) should get everything sorted. They will repay the tax overpaid and ask them to issue a PAYE code to the employer to stop tax being deducted in future.
