Basic bank account for discharged bankrupt

Has anyone opened an account with a bank other than Coop and Barclays and could recommend a bank? I just tried to apply for a NatWest basic bank account and they said I was declined due to bankruptcy on my file. It said something about taking discharge notice into branch but unsure if they would still accept me. It actually shows on my credit file that I am discharged so found this odd.
I was discharged in 2008 if this is relevant.
Thanks

Exactly the same with me (Nat West).
Initially declined, but had appointment in branch - took my discharge form and basic account was opened there and then, without any problems. (They were quite helpful, actually). This was six weeks after discharge.
I like it (over Co-op), as the internet gives you up to date available balance in real time. :j0 -
That would be good as that's one thing I find a little frustrating with coop. I only really want it so I have a separate bills account to help me budget so will go into the branch.0

Have been accepted by Natwest in branch

I wonder if the account will be reported to credit reference agencies - every little green tick helps!!0 -
Not sure if it helps you at all as you said not barclays. But i opened a cashcard account with barclays when i went bankrupt and i still have the same account but have a debit card instead of the cashpoint card. Never had a problem with them and can access my account online too.0

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind if I ever need another account0
