in Cutting tax
Hi ,
I left my previous job on 19th july 2006 and didn't start work again untill 30th Oct 2006 , during this time i didn't work or claim any benifits. I received my p45 from my employer the Military but the dates on it were wrong my new employer informed me i needed to fill in p46 which i did. i have been receiving a medical pension from the military whcih was liable to tax since the 20th July 2006 , this became tax free after the veterans agency reassesed my disability , i received back all the tax i had paid on this and thats fine. The issue now is that i am still on tax code 503l M1 in my new job and need to know if i am owed tax from both this and my previous job ? i have rang the tax office who haven't been any help at all and have pushed me from one dept to another.

The tax code sounds correct to me but without more information like a helluva lots of dates and figures I can't really help.
I would suggest a letter to your Tax Office would get a better response. The 'Toni' is as in Collette not Swiss

Toni is right - You don't mention for which month you have the 503L M1 tax code.
If it is for your pay SINCE 06 Apr 07, and you worked for the same employer bfore 05 Apr 07, then your tax code should now be 522L. You may be entitled to a rebate for 2006/07, ask the veterans agency if they can help.
If your employer has not changed your tax code to 522L for the new tax year, tell them to look up the HMRC guidance on starting the tax year from 6 April 2007, Employees without a new tax code on form P9(T) from your HMRC office - (page 4) it says add 19 to any tax code ended in L, and "do not copy or carrry over an M1 markings". A lot of employers think they have to wait to receive a P9(T) before changing the tax code. This is not true - hence the reason why the HMRC often don't send one - they presume the employer has already done it!0 -
Hi ,
Thanks for the help. To clear things up i have had tax code 503l m1 since november 2006.0 -
Have you had a payslip since 6th April?
The new tax code should be 522L and as mentioned before the M1 should drop off.0
