Hi,
Just wondering if the situation is fair?
My mother in law exchanged her flat with another person and she had paid her council tax in full for the year.
They were due to give her the sum which they stated over the phone however they split the total with another party.
This other person was living in the house however they were not on the signed lease with the council and was sleeping on the couch.
The money was paid to the council via my mil bank account and personally I think it slightly strange that this other person can claim half the amount and receive it without them checking with my mil?

You need to check with the council but its unlikely they refunded the other person without them being on the council tax account (often even lodgers manage to get added).I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
