Pentagon laying off 46,000 staff

While the headline caught my eye. This was more interesting.

Is the US about to reach nadir? Like the British Empire is the US on its way to losing its crown.
He also said the Pentagon could force its 800,000 civilian employees to lose one day of work per week without pay from April, in a move that would save $5bn.

To put it into context, that's about a third of the number of jobs being created in the private sector each month at present (NFPs). It's a drop in the ocean.

'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher

A pay cut of 25% for 800,000 people would have ramifications.

UK unions would call a general strike at such a proposal.

And a fat lot of good it would do them if the country had literally run out of cash. It would just be the winter of 1978-9 all over again.

Depends on the people. I've heard Union leaders call very vocally for pay cuts for people who work in banking for example.

Of course that's because once you earn above a certain amount you automatically stop being "'ard working families" & become "greeeeeedy wide boys". Not quite sure what the amount is, it must be pretty high since it's people like Bob Crowe who talk that way & he earns £145K+
