Tax refund automatic?

in Cutting tax
OH has been self employed for years.
In 10/11 he paid an advance on his tax bill.
His income dramatically dropped 11/12.
He completed his SA 17th Jan and a significant amount appeared in our bank account today titled HMRC SA.
We've not had written confirmation of what this money is. Will HMRC automatically return overpaid tax a week after SA?
BTW, we don't know if OH overpaid as he always paid an accountant to do his books - and he just paid the amount to HMRC which his accountant told him to, back in July. We couldn't afford the accountant this year and the books were simple enough to do this year as not many figures.
So will HMRC turn this around in 1 week?

They have done already !
They have compared the amount due to be paid for 11/12 by 31/01/13 (because he has submitted his return) against the Payment On Account he made last year and have found he has overpaid - therefore he has had a refund.
Get him to log into his SA account and check the account summary, it will tell him there what the refund is for.
(If he isnt sure put the money in a savings account until he is sure its his (or yours !) to spend !).
Every year I help my dad do his SA return well before the due date and he gets a refund within 14 days of him filing the return and it being processed.0
