buying fruit/vegetables in Edinburgh
I wanted to know where everyone else who lives in Edinburgh buys their fruit and vegetables cheaply. I don't know of any local markets other than Ingilston (have to go too early!) or the monthly farmers market (not cheap) and I would prefer some where near the Leith area.
Many Thanks

I live in Leith and I shop in Great Junction Street for my fruit and veg to a shop called Fruit heaven.
There is also good old lidl in the KirkgateTreat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0 -
If you are round about Marchmont, lots of veg shops there run by Chinese.
I haven't tried the Farmer's Market as I am never in town but I think I read somewhere about one at Balerno, although thats the other side of town for you and not much use!
I think the Farmer's Market is twice a month?0 -
there's a small fruit and veg shop called tattie shaws i think (it has a yellow canopy and fruit outside it), its really good despite being so small the prices and quality are way better than tescos0

I have now decided to go to a farm shop called lowes at danderhall, I can really reccommend it. They have locally grown fruit and veg as well as organic and you can pick your own strawberrys, rasperberries, tay berries, tummel berries, black and red currants, brambles, apples and many other berries which I can't remember the name of. The berries come in at about £2.50 a kilo compared to £10 a kilo in asda. They also sell eggs, milk and cheese. Any one who watched the supermarket secrets programme will know that dairy farmers are having to sell up their farms because the supermarkets don't give them a fair price. The eggs are the same price as the supermarket but the milk is £1 a litre for organic milk, this is about 30 p more expensive than the supermarket but it makes me feel good to buy everything local!0

hello
I use Tattie Shaws at the very top of Leith Walk. The service is excellent - v friendly. The prices and quality are excellent too. I highly recommend them (I have no affiliation - just been v impressed)
HTHr.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
Tattie Shaws, thanks for the tip - not too far from me so will try them out, not far from Valvonna & Crolla so good excuse to pop in there too.
Get most of my fruit and veg from a box scheme at the moment, [ https://www.eastcoastorganics.co.uk ] but sometimes I run out by Monday/Tuesday so worth knowing for extras until the Wednesday box delivery.
Also the box never has stuff like lemons or ginger and I always need those and extra carrots for the juicer...
They even got a recommendation from Clarissa whatsername (2 fat ladies):
"This week’s recipe is beetroot and very lovely beetroot too, bought from Tattie Shaws, that excellent vegetable shop on Leith Walk. I love going there. Not only will he tell you which potato meets your requirements, but also which Lothian farmer grew them. His vegetables are always in good nick and on the rare occasions when they are a little faded, he will tell you they are only fit for soup."

I think we need to support wee shops like this rather than £2 billion a year profit supermarkets like the big T - better to support a small local business who in turn supports our local farmers.
Can also recommend Crombies on Broughton Street if you need a good local butcher (try the Toulouse sausages - yummy!)
Here is a good list of local shops:

hiya competitions cafe
was in Tattie Shaw's on my way home today - what a great selection. Can confirm the beetroot is lovely, and the carrots were nice with dinner too.
Thanks for the tip about Crombies - will try them out asap. Nothing beats a well made sausager.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -
any idea what time they [Tattie Shaws] close? - need some stuff for a recipe but won't be able to get there until late (6pm or just after..)"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
