Hello,

I've recently been sent numberous letters from Advantis regarding a supposed debt with United Utilities from a previous address, and wondered if anyone knows much about this collection agency.

I left the address around 2008, and the UU bill was actually in my friends' name. The final bill was paid in full.

The most recent letter stated the debt was for £287, for consumption on the property ending in 2012 (!?)

The letter also threatens court action/CCJ. Does anyone know if Advantis have any legal grounds to pursue this? Or would it be best to just leave it as I'm certain this isn't my debt?

I believe by contacting these people it can lead to further harrassment.

My friend recieved the same letter but for 1000! we called United Utilities direct and requested the dates of the charges and the account had been closed and then the new account put back in her name instead of the landlords. We fax them the tennancy agreement from her current property and the landlord details from the old property and weve heard nothing since.

    hi.

I used to work for them *hangs head in shame*

They cant add any charges and dont take you to court - if they are unsuccessful the debt will pass back united utilities after a set period of time (each client is different).

If it were me i'd ignore the letters as like you i wouldn't want to contact them. Sounds like they are fishing for occupants, and seeing as you weren't at the property at the time of the debt it can't be yours to pay- (its up to them to prove who is liable, not you to prove not).
