Help with unusual[?] situation

Hi moneysavingexperts :)

I wonder if you can help me with a problem I have in my life regarding my credit file/rating?

8 years ago I got a mortgage with my then-gf. 4 years later we broke up and she moved to Asia where she proceeded to completely ignore and not pay any of her credit cards / loans / mobile phone bill, etc from the UK  After about 6-12 months [I can't remember exactly] her mother eventually paid them all off for her but I had lots of letters with red writing on come through the door demanding payment and a few phone calls [but never any bailiffs or anything like that].

I have since applied for a couple of things but have been refused, much to my surprise as I have a perfect credit rating as far as I know - I've had a fair few loans / credit cards / mobile phone contracts / mortgages, etc and I have never missed a payment, ever and before this incident I had never been refused any credit.

I have had no loans whatsoever for the past 10 years, barring this mortgage and I have a fair amount of savings.

My question are:

- Is there anything I can do to change this situation? [experian / equifax, etc?]

- Am I !!!!!!ed until she is off the mortgage [which is very unlikely to happen anytime soon due to tightening of mortgages, possible negative equity, only 1 wage in my household, etc]

Thanks for reading and I hope someone can help :)

If the mortgage is the only remaining joint debt and you've been living apart for six months or more then you should be able to delink your credit reports, which should then help your credit rating. I just covered this in a Q&A on our website - hope this helps.

  • Thanks a lot James, I have done as you have suggested and hopefully that will resolve the situation! It was very easy to do.

I have just tried to do the same with Equifux [oops I misspelt that :)] and have nearly blown a fuse after spending 30mins trawling their [very unhelpful] website and not finding a way to change anything or even ask a simple question so I spent another 45mins on the phone only to be told by their callcentre [based on another planet by the state of their English] that I have to create ANOTHER account just to allow me to ask a question  No doubt several months of pain will have been had by the time this is resovled, if it ever get resovled..

    Thanks again!
