Moving Back to UK & Bankruptcy

Hi...I lived in the UK for 6 years, marriage ended & had to declare bankrtupcy, then moved back to America to get feet on the ground. I now want to return to the UK before my ILR (Indefinte Leave to Remain) expires this year, my child's father lives there, plus many close ties. HOWEVER, I will still be bankrupt for another 4 years - unfortunate extenuating circumstances & complications from marriage ending.
I am a single mother, one child, and though I can likely return to the same company I worked for before and so would have my employement sorted to start out with, I am nervous about what living with bankruptcy would mean for me there. But if that doesn't work out, do employers generally do credit checks? Would bankrtupcy affect my job prospects? I'm not about to start my own company or take on a directorship, obviously. And my field is the Arts.
I know I won't have credit and don't even want it. But more concerned with will I be able to rent a flat? I've read some of the posts on here and as I kind of presumed, people do find a way. After all, people must go bankrupt all the time, and still have to go out and rent a flat!
But if anyone has any input, ideas, experience with this, I'd be grateful to hear it. I am going to try to live somewhere where I would not need to buy a car as I won't be able to afford it at first anyway. In an absolute emergency I could rely on US credit, but really don't want to go there, especially as the exchange rate is so horrible for us now.
Thanks in advance for reading and any input.
