Getting money out of my pension

I hate to say it but Im a dummy when it comes to my pension. I am convinced that all pensions and endownments are a con. However, Ive heard that I can get my money out of my pension by buying into a business or property, is this true? With buying a property can this be used to buy a new house? If not I can buy into my other halfs business (yes I do trust him although we arent married!) and if I do this can we get the money out of the business in the same tax year to buy our own property, he is self employed but has a fixed permanent business which believe me you could not move! Any help would be much appreciated.
