Not my fault people get wound up by those pesky and troublesome things we like to call "facts". ;)

Doesn't that show a lack of vision?

Given that even in London the majority of space is not built on, and in the South East the vast majority of space is not built on, surely we could use a few percent of that area to find a place for some expanded transport infrastructure?

Hamish, come here to London and LIVE and commute in it for at least a year. Then tell me if we have space for lots more of whatever. Deal? :)

And on a slightly more serious note, this is a great example of perception versus reality....

Its fine, I don't think we really need much green space anyway. We should just concrete over the lot of it - that would create a lot of jobs too. What's not to like?

While we are at it, the country would be a lot more productive if we got rid of weekends and holidays. Time off is a complete waste of time!

    !

    Eh?

How can you possibly describe going from 2% "concreted over" to 4% "concreted over", even if we doubled population, as being "the lot of it"?

I'm cross with myself that I have only just discovered this thread, someone a while back suggested that they didn't want to see the faces of the last government if Labour get in at the next election, where do you think that David Cameron came from? He was the one of a group that advised Norman Lamont to join the ERM, but some of you have short term memories, and because he has 'nice hair' you all voted him in!
We need immigration, even unskilled workers that send their wage 'back home' they will need somewhere to live, to eat, and they pay tax and NI contributions? Throw open those gates, we need workers not lazy breeding smack heads on council estates draining our system.
Did you know that a person with clinical depression is not eligible for government help or DLA, but an alcoholic, or a smack head is considered disabled?? what is THAT all about?
And if Scotland want to be independent, thats fine too, take your oil and your gas and land and be happy! just don't ask to come back when you mess it up!
And i'm not a commie either, athough my husband would disagree

Don't worry yourself about your many failings, or your need to take out your obvious rage on your fellow-citizens.

And certainly don't worry about your celtic cousins. When the phone doesn't ring, that'l be us!:D

The fact is that we could double our population and still have 96% of England not built on, and more like 98% of Scotland.

Mm. That is a fact but it's not exactly the full story. It implies that the other 96% is unused.

I believe approx 70% of the UK is farmland for a start. And we still need to import food. If we doubled the population we'd either need 140% of the UK to be farmland (hm that'd be a challenge) or need to import infinitely more food. At increasingly expensive prices. So although it's true not much of the UK is built on, the bare facts don't tell much of the story.

In practice (Heathrow expansion, HS2) this seems to be a problematic idea.

Crossrail is at least in progress, but it's slow and expensive progress.

Plenty of brownfield sites that can be utilised. The UK imports a lot of food because we don't have the climate to be self sufficient in foods such as bananas - nothing to do with the amount of farmland.

There are plenty of brownfield sites but for some reason developers seem to like snapping up green field sites.

By us farmland appears to be going out of use as it is currently cheaper to import foodstuffs. Surley this isn't sustainable as fuel/transport costs increase and fuels become scarcer?
