First-timers buyers learn to sacrifice

  • No doubt they would. But the fact remains that today's young can't on average spend the money that many do on gadgets, entertainment, fashion clothes, alcohol, holidays, gap years, lavish weddings etc etc and still expect to have enough for the deposit on a house. It isn't do-able.

Sounds like some of my friends, they would rather have the latest gadget or designer gear that will be worthless in a years time. They'll realise that its do-able one day... and by then I'll have half of my deposit :D

I agree its not possible but really what is the point of this thread? To shame the young into not enjoying their hard earned money now? To inject a bit of reality into their lives, to make them understand that the days of their parents where a 4 bedroom house could be bought for £28000 are over.

I think they understand that all too well. Things aren't particularly great just now. Its rubbed into their faces at every opportunity. So what if they want to have the latest gadget or iphone? At some point priorities will change. They will want the house, they will realise what needs to be sacrificed in order to do so. None of this will affect you George so Im not sure where all this animosity towards the young comes from. Just remember at the end of the day, when you're elderly and infirm, who's gonna be wiping your bum for you

It's not really animosity, it's exasperation. Every generation experiences it as they mature -- they have the experience and can point out to the young the error of their ways and a better solution. But of course no younger generation ever listens !

The only animosity is towards the minority of the young who resent the older generation as if all their problems are their parents' fault within some some sort of baby boomer conspiracy. I guess this thread just says that the answer to their problems in fact lies at least partly in their own hands. But it's not telling many what they want to hear, and they still want to have their cake and eat it.

So in your mind a journalistic slip and some poor sub-editing discredits the theme of the whole article ?

Do you sit watching historical dramas in the hope that you will spot a TV aerial in the background ?

Is this likely in a reccessionary period though?

The point was even if we did have it it would still take years to eat into the accumulated HPI. On the basis we won't it will take a lot longer.
