Closed, thanks for helping with my desktop last weekend. It's now great. I wonder if I could trouble you to check out my laptop please? It's only 0.99GB RAM. Have done all modifications in your "speed up" thread and cut all unnecessary crap.

Just wondered if the Hijack throwed up any obvious omissions?

    Don't need quickset.exe , don't need digital line detect dlg.exe.

    TBH though at some point it is just easier to buy more RAM than to try and achieve mission impossible if a machine is running slow because of low RAM.

    Thanks Splott. Unfortunately I don't have the knowledge or the cash at the moment to add extra ram. It's not a dog by any means, but I just want to get the best out of it.

    Install and run startuplite, accept suggested changes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/StartUpLite.exe

    Unless you need them running all the time, use the startup tab in msconfig (start, run, msconfig )to disable these items from running at startup (they can always be run manually if needed). When you reboot after doing this, you will get a prompt about selective startup - tick Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility when windows starts,and click ok

    Install and run ccleaner (untick the google toolbar during the install). Untick the "windows log files" box, under the system heading before cleaning. Also Tick the java cache tick box under CCleaner, applications, internet to wipe the java cache which sometimes hides infections. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim

    Download and install cleanmem http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem (download direct download). (important:use the "download direct download" link on pcwintech.com, not one from a 3rd party hosting site, the correct filename starts with cleanmem_xxxxx_setup.exe) - if you go to a 3rd party site, you could end up installing a completely different piece of software. Although the site is a little confusing, Cleanmem is free, the paid for version is not needed!

    When you've done all that, reboot, note the commit charge before opening any applications, and post it along with a fresh hijackthis log and any logs of infections

    When you are happy the machine is working optimally, backup to an external drive, using the image this disk feature (not clone) of http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx and create a macrium rescue cd at the end of the backup, then if anything goes wrong in future, you can restore a fully working system with all data and programs intact, in minutes

    Closed, implemented all your points and already the laptop is much better. Only problem I've had is uninstalling the printer software. Yesterday I accidentally pressed "print". Now it is running a continuous loop trying to fulfil my request on a no longer existing printer!

    Each time I attempt to delete program files/software it states "cannot delete while printer is printing" or similar. It's not a major biggie, but don't really want it continually running that process in the background.

    Any ideas, folks?

    yes o2's can be deleted or disabled using ie, tools, manage addons

    Although I use CCleaner I want to follow your instructions for running it. When I download/update from the Piriform site the link only takes me to the standard version. When I follow your link to the slim version the page only displays for 5 seconds and then goes blank. What's the difference between the slim and standard version?

    The version I used was the latest edition standard version downloaded from cnet site:

    Like Closed said, be careful on installation that it doesn't try to install toolbars, web browsers, etc.
