Fat Burning Classes?

What you do depends on your goal. I want strength and more strength, so I love barbell training and go mad with the protein. I'll probably ease up and eat more carbs when I start Spartan Race training.
We're not uninformed. We just all want different things from our workouts

Ditch that. Eat a balanced diet daily to keep energy levels up. You'll need your muscles and liver full of carbohydrate to be able to burn fat efficiently when you exercise even at low intensity.

Nothing whatsoever wrong with intermittent fasting, and it's used successfully by a lot of athletes both professional and amateur.
I only read the first article, which was basically idiotic. Your blood always has glucose circulating in it, because if it didn't your brain would shut down and you would die. Hence why the human body has multiple redundant mechanisms for turning both fat and muscle into glucose for the blood stream. If you don't have enough carbs to keep your blood glucose at the level your body wants then it will start to metabolise fat to keep the level up. Which is why diet, even without exercise, will burn fat away.
People should be doing exercise for many other reasons of course, but burning fat is 90% about diet and restricting calorie intake.0 -
Have you tried Bokwa? It's loads of fun, easy to follow and you can burn up to 1200 calories per class. http://www.bokwafitness.com/My mind not only wanders .......... sometimes it leaves completely0

I joined a gym last year as I would like to lose weight, tone up, etc. I found that I work best in classes, which my gym does, as I tend to fart around in the gym and don't push myself. These are the classes that my gym does and that I can make it to:
Spin, Spin and abs, Spin and Circuits, Ab Attack, Circuits, Bodypump and Boxercise (once a week).
I've got a heart rate monitor so have been using it during training. I want to burn fat, but I'm not sure which classes are best for efficient, fast fat burning?
I thought circuits would be good but according to my HRM most of the time my heart rate was in the cardio range even though we were doing squats, burpees, weights, etc.
No offense, but if you were genuinely motivated you'd be running in all weathers and terrains, up hill and doing HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training).
Dwindling around in the gym, talking to people and playing around on your Ipod arent going to help.
Watch some Rocky training montages and abuse your body.
NO PAIN NO GAIN.

Maybe try signing up for an event - the Spartan Race in September is being a great motivator for me...I don't think I'll come first but I REALLY don't want to be last!

Something I recommend is to make excercise part of everyday life, not something like an added extra. I do do formal excercise but in addition here are some things you can do in every day life / non formal excercise regimes;
For example yesterday I got my kids and thier mates over the park and we played football - only a few on each side, both in the morning and then 2 hours in afternoon. Constant sprinting and changing direction left us absolutely cream cracke'd.:p. Try not to be one of those parents that's way too sensible and only plays for say 30 mins - not enough!
Even on holiday, there are all sorts of opportunities. Example for me on way to Wales is to pull into a layby and with the kids run up a very steep hill, plus try and catch them (I'm the monster). Similarly don't just chill out in the sea - do 10 minutes super fast treating water plus a fast 5 minute swim. Around the pool spend an hour being a shark getting the kids - doner at high intensity is a marvellous workout.
Whilst watching tv always work out - some excercises are very easy such as holding out a leg / legs for minutes at a time. Try and do 30 mins whilst watching tv.
Dunno, just a few ideas to help those that find formal excercise a pain.0 -
Haha my dad used to chase me in the pool pretending he was a sea monster! We both loved it. A little thankyou to you Conrad for bringing back such a great memory!

I quite agree with you, hence the classes. Running around in the rain doesn't help me so much as put me off of exercise - been there, done that, and got the tshirt to say that I aint a runner!
I enjoy classes so am more motivated to exercise and tend to work harder in them. I try to aim to do a mix of cardio/ strength training in order to lose fat and tone up, but was surprised to find that the circuits class mainly had my heart rate in the cardio zone, which is why I started this thread in the first place.
Thanks for the advice everyone, I've been doing intermittant fasting since Christmas and am cutting down my carbs so that should help too!
HBS: I used to have to strive towards a goal, I did a 10K to kickstart my routine again and used to have little milestones like looking good for certain events. But I've found that I had to really change my mindset so that I'm just aiming for a healthy lifestyle in general.0 -
Wow! Well done for the 10k
