NI number on an application form?

Can an application form as you for your NI number?

If they have your full name, address, nationality, NI number, etc surely they could use all this info if someone shifty got hold if it?

That's different because you will have a contract with the company.

Why should they ask for a NI from all the people who apply for the job?

The government website says not to give your NI number unless it is needed. There's no need for it on a job application.

Yes but I wont be sending that over on an email.

Besides they can not check the NI # is proof you can work here as their form states which I find odd.

I've had to put my NI number on a few application forms, plus when I've registered with agencies. Never particularly bothered me, I was more concerned with getting the job!

    Had to?

Agencies you usually do in person when they check you are who you say you are too not over the airwaves. Having said that I have never given mine or had to to anyone unless I got the job with the company on a starter form.

I'm told it is useful to weed out those who may not have been issued with an NI number. However, it you like the idea of employment, simply transpose some digits to prevent misuse, as you can correct it after!

A NI number means nothing as you could be from France or Poland say with no NI number and moving here to work.

How does a company check the NI at interview stage then, that's what I'd like to know. They do not have access to the database.

I had this conversation the other day with a friend as he hasn't got a driving licence and passport and I said to them basically if a place accepts a birth certificate as who the person is and has their national insurance number it could quite literally be anyone.

National Insurance number is used for banking, jobs and benefits. But if you trust them with all the rest of the details you send in your application (your address, often date of birth, where you have worked and the like) then your national insurance number is another bit of you. Its true that it is needed if successful, but you usually end up handing over so much info on application anyway

DOB is not allowed on application forms and it's not on this.

Show the legislation that supports this please.

I think you will find that almost anything can be on an application form however there are elements that you cannot use when making your selection criteria (eg gender, race etc). If you cannot use it to filter candidates then whats the point of asking it, especially if by asking it it suggests you are going to be using it.

Dont mistake common practice with the law.

NI/ UTR and the rest of these numbers are not sensitive and cannot be used as proof of ID
