Asda Electric Steam Iron fault

I bought a 1600W Asda purple steam iron with a metal soleplate about 18 months ago and it just exploded - sparks flying out of the soleplate and a big bang. I called Asda customer services to find out if there were any other reported problems to save any other customers risking an accident and because my father has the same iron. OK, I know it was out of 1 year guarantee, but I didn't expect compensation. I even offered to drop off the iron at a local store for their safety people to check it out. They refused but generally seemed unconcerned about the risk.
I note they sell a similar looking 2400W steam iron. I won't be buying that as a replacement because now I don't trust their brand, nor will I shop at Asda for my new dishwasher, washing machine ... so Asda have lost far more than the value of an iron - by poor customer service.
Some years ago there were a string of complaints about Asda irons I read on your website - I wish I'd read these comments before buying our current irons. I want to buy from a company that shows me they care about safety risks (beyond 1 year) from electrical item faults - and for me, that is not Asda, especially as I can't add a review comment on their direct website. No wonder all the comments make items appear great!
Has anyone else experienced this problem or does someone have to get injured or killed to get a better customer service complaint? How can we alert other potential customers we are unhappy at Asda's attitude or method of sharing feedback ... stand in the store next to the irons with a big plaquard?
