Help Confusion

Hi, Well my partner has just received his PAYE Tax code for the year 2012-2013. He is now claiming Jsa incomebased. Whats confussing me is they have left a special note at the bottom saying they have sent his new code to an old employer, but this is not his previous employer, this is an employer from 3 jobs ago, It also says they are sending it to check he hasnt paid too much tax .He hasnt worked for this employer for over 10 years! this company made him redundant. Why would they do this? Can anyone help?
