In case anyone is worried, the following information about irradiation is from the Food Standards Agency's website:
"All foods which have been irradiated must be labelled as 'irradiated' or 'treated with ionising radiation'. Where an irradiated food is used as an ingredient in another food, the words 'irradiated' or 'treated with ionising radiation' should appear next to the ingredient in the list of ingredients.
When irradiated food is not pre-packed these same words shall appear together with the name of the product on a display or notice above or besides the container in which the products are placed."0 -
The five a day campaign was started by marketing people and was adopted here as it sounds catchy when it was decided that people needed to increase their intake. I know that there are doubts about whether a diet high in fruit and veg help prevent cancer but there are other good reasons to eat fruit and veg. It has been proven that people who eat more fruit and veg are more likely to be a healthy weight and there are many health issues associated with being overweight. Fruit and veg are also the only source of vitamin C and a shortage of that can be fatal. Over the last few years there has been an increase in the numbers of children diagnosed with scurvy caused by a vitamin C shortage.
Some other countries include potatoes in the daily allowance but the UK decided to exclude them as they thought people would then eat chips and crisps and say they were healthy.I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly

I buy from my local stall, it's fresh and tastes great, and very rarely do I ever throw anything away. Supermarket fruit and veg is unripe and I found in some cases never ripen (plums being an example). It is handy for bananas and grapes though, things that I'd like to hang around for longer. Lidl's pinepples are also good.I have purchased veg from the market before and I had to bin most of it as it gone over in 2 days.
I can keep stuff bought in supermarkets for weeks.
Tbf, the Department of Health also jumped onto this as studies show that people who consume higher quantities of fruit and veg are less prone to developing and dying of certain conditions (although I agree, you can't quantify the benefits, or how much is ideal so 5-a-day is as good as a finger in the air). It stands to reason that if you fill up on fruit and veg there will be less room for fat-laden goodies. So whilst there's logic behind it, there's no absolute evidence of benefit.blackandwhitebunny wrote: »The five a day campaign was started by marketing people and was adopted here as it sounds catchy when it was decided that people needed to increase their intake.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
