Selling a story to a newspaper?

Does anyone have any experience of selling a story to a newspaper.
I'm basically wondering how it is done. I've got a story which I believe would be of interest and while I wouldn't mind just releasing the info online for free obviously if I can get a bit of money then even better.
I have no idea which newspapers buy storys or how one would go about contacting them in the first place.
Any pointers greatfully received.

Buy newspaper. If newspaper currently carries something similar to what you've written, write / e-mail the editor with an abstract or sample, asking if they will consider it for publication?0

Thank you. I was actually thinking less on the lines of my writing the story and more on the providing the info for their journalist to write the article. There is no intelligent life out there ... ask any goldfish!0

Still just contact them. But I don't think it would ever be worth at as no matter what the story is they could twist it however they wanted.0

To answer:
Yes it is hard info, ie fact not fiction
Is it about other people? It is about a company rather than people. It is about illegal practices within a large national company.
Obviously, I would keep my information to documented facts. I don't wish to risk libel. There is no intelligent life out there ... ask any goldfish!0
