E Books

I recently received a Nook e-reader as a present and although I love it many of the books are no cheaper than a paperback.
Is there a way to download cheaper books via my PC rather through Nook?

Nooks use the same ebook format as iBooks (ePub). Kindles use the mobi format.

Calibre is a free programme which will catalogue your ebooks and allow you to change formats. For instance is will change kindles mobi format to ePub and vis versa.

You can also download a very small programme which you can add to calibre which will remove the DRM from your ebooks and allow you to read them on any device.

You can then simply plug your ebook reader into your laptop and transfer the files from calibre.

Books for your ipad or kindle fire are even easier to move. I use an app called Dropbox

For more detailed advice you should try forums such as Mobilism.org where ebook enthusiasts will generally be happy to talk you through the various options.

    Happy reading:)

My library and many others in the UK now offer ebooks for lending. Most are in ePub format and should offer another option for your Nook. The great thing about ebooks is that they delete themselves, so you never build up fines (that's the case with how it works on ours anyway).

Minor correction: the DRM* infrastructure (see OverDrive) revokes your access rights; the 'book' itself is totally inert. If it suddenly disappears, it's because something else removed it.
