Hi I have been out of work for several years now, well ever since school actually due to getting pregnant more than once.
My kids are in school full time now, and I have the offer of a job part time.
I want to go off JSA and into work, but someone said you will have to pay emergency tax to start with?
Will I be able to just show my P45 from the JSA and put that down as my last income?

Its actually my husband who was claiming JSA in a joint claim, so would I still be using his P45 from JSA? I have not got a P45 as this will be my first ever job even though I am starting later in my life.0

When you start your job, and you sign off JSA, you should get a P45 from the Job Centre and you give part 1 of that to your employer, and keep parts 2 and possibly 3 for your records.
In the meantime you may have to complete a P46 form when you start your job. You may also need proof of your National Isurance number (you may have a plastic card with it on, or it'll be on any correspondence you have had with tax credits, job centre, HMRC etc.
there is a possibility that you get put on 'emergency tax' but this isn't any more than you would get taxed normally. (your tax code on your payslip will be something like "801" and then some letters).
Be sure, when you get your P60 (in APril or May - depends on how efficient your employer is) that you claim for any overpayment of tax as you probably won't have earned enough this tax year (2012 - 2013) to have paid tax. it's really straight forward, there's a form on the HMRC website to complete.
Good Luck!

I wonder if I could ask some more questions, if you would be so kind?
What is our tax allowance? Is it as a married couple or individually?
If I am working a couple of days a week so part time for an employer and a couple of days self employed, if I make a loss the first year in SE, can that be taken off from my employment?0 -

The answer above is partially incorrect. If its your partners claim to JSA and he will continue claiming there will not be aP45 issued, even if he signed off any P45 would be in his name.
The part about P46 is correct, make sure you ask about this when you start.
Your tax allowance is for you personally, there is no married persons allowance any more. Its currently £8,105 and from April £9,440 so if you're earning less than this you won't pay any tax once its sorted so anything you end up paying (if any) will be refunded in full."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0 -

Thanks, so I will need a P46 form, is this for first time jobs?
What about my question, if I am earning over £9,440 from employment but making a little loss from self employment, would that bring me back under to be a non taxpayer?0 -

A P46 is for anyone who doesn't have a P45 so it could be first time workers or just those that haven't worked in the current tax year/have lost there P45. See here, looks like you can print it off and take it with you. that way you don't have to rely on the employer being on the ball.

Sorry didn't see your question about self employment. They'll be completely separate I think, if you earn over £9,440 in April then you'll pay tax on it, for your self employment you'd have to do a tax return and any loss would be off set against your earning so it balances out. I am not sure though so it might be worth contacting the self employment helpline or see here

Thank you very much for your help, but I still dont understand.
This year I will be under the allowance because only 3 months till April new tax yr.
But next yr I will be earning just over £9,440 assuming I stay there for all the next tax yr.
I am also trying to start a self employment business and I expect to make a loss in the first years trading which is normal isnt it?
So for income tax purposes will the loss bring me back under the £9,440 allowance?
Also for WTC or soon to be universal credit and other benefits like housing benefit, what do I declare?
Can I declare my profit for the year taking into account my expenses for my self employment?
Also I understand if I work less than 30hrs in my employment, but bring that upto over 30hrs from SE, is it ok to tell WTC over 30hrs total?
Thanks in advance. I would really appreciate some help here.0 -
I can't help with any of your other questions i'm afraid, but your Self Employment and your employment are treated seperately, so no you cannot deduct your loss from self employment from your wages for your normal job.0
