HELP!!! Car won't start

Hi,

I was off work yesterday and as it was snowing and bloody freezing, I didn't use my car. Today I went to go to work but my car didn't start, I have tried again after work and still nothing.

What to do??

  • Given the freezing cold weather, its very likely that the battery needs a charge. You could either find someone with leads to jump start it till you can get it looked over properly, or if you can wait till you can get to a shop like Halfords you could buy a car battery charger. If you call a local breakdown company they should be able to get it going, but of course you will have to pay their fee, which will be about £60 (or loads more if you try AA/ RAC without a policy). However the plus of this is that if its not the battery they will be able to help. May be best to do it at a time when a garage is open in case its not a flat battery.

DD had that problem, RAC did a new battery with free fitting. Don`t know if that`s everyone or just members
  • Thanks for the replies.

    dacouch - it's petrol.

thefishdude - I turn the key in the ignition, it clicks but does not start up.

carlislelass - I'm not a member so I'm thinking it will be costly, I have checked the cover that I got with my insurance but it is not covered if it breaks down at home.

Battery dead..probably been going downhil for a while and cold weather has killed it. Try a battery charger o it for a few hours. A voltmeter would be useful for some testing of charging system and how battery performs under load. May well need a new batt if its been in there a while but check charging first.

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
  • Sounds like a dead battery. I wouldn't bother going down the jump start/long drive to charge route as it's likely to fail again.

New battery required. As above, check out ECP (they often have discounts).

IMVHO, Bosch is the only way to go.

Your battery is flat. You have 2 choices.
1/. If you have only being doing short runs. Charge your battery up start the car and check the voltage with the car running, should be minimum of 14v, if it stays around 12v your alternator has failed.
2/. Buy a new battery ( places like battery megastore will deliver a fully charged battery next day ) I mention these because they say order before 4.30pm for delivery next day between 9am and 6pm but 2 years ago when mine failed I ordered one at 6pm it was delivered at 8.30am next day.

    This is your best advice.....

Wouldn't go Bosch though, they're just rebranded Varta batteries and cost twice as much.
