Fed up of paying for highlights in my hair

Hi moneysavers
Sure this question has been asked before but could'nt find it.
I currently have very highlighted hair. I pay £60 at my salon for half a head highlights and a cut & blow dry about every 6-8 weeks.
I am currently trying to cut back on un-neccesary expenses.
Last December I tried a mobile hairdresser and it still came to the same price.
I am currently condsidering some sort of boxed highlighting system or having a go at foil highlighting.
Otherwise I was thinking of trying to grow the blonde out and going back to my boring mousy blonde-light brown.
Is there other money savers out their who have the same problem and what do you do?
Thanks all

Hi I don't but my friend used to have highlights. Her hair was short so regrowth showed quickly and she was paying £80 every 6-8 weeks . In the end she plumped for a set of lowlights to tone it down, then went to a multi-tonal home colour kit. She now does it herself and spends about a fiver each time. Huge difference. She told me this when I commented how much glossier her hair was now its darker, and which salon did it? Lol.Bossymoo

Have you got a friend that would help you do it at home. Would be so much cheaper eh. Perhaps you could repay the favour by helping do hers.If you change nothing, nothing will change!!0

I'm no hairdresser but If you have it highlighted too often you'll loose the effect and look like all over blonde so wouldn't it be cheaper & quicker to do a full bleach?
From experience the best way to grow out the highlights without a halo is get a decent hairdresser and get low lights put in, a decent hairdresser wouldn't have let you over highlight your hair.
There are some fab colours out there at the moment that look good on mousy hair, I'm sure it's not that drab.
Mid blonde hair can look fab, I'm sure it's not as boring as you think. There are also lots of products on the market that aim to lighten your hair without bleaching it.
I personally think the nicest hair is natural looking healthy shiny hair with a good cut, the reason you probably need to go to maintain it so often is that it's wrecked from overbleaching which is lovely steady earner for your hairdresser. If I were you I get some different shades of low lights based around your natural colour which shouldn't wreck your hair and give it plenty of tlc and work on searching for a fab new style if you still think need a bit of oomph with the colour you'll have the choice of what's on trend. If your hair is reasonably light and you still want the tonal effects just carry on with the low lights near your shade, you'll save a fortune and look fab.0 -
If you don't fancy using a home kit, then do you have a College near you? If they have a Hairdressing Department then it can be very cheap to have your hair done by the students. as it is a colour it will be third-year students, so they will be quite experienced. The only down side is that you have to be prepared to spend quite a few hours there! You could still go back to your own hairdressers if you want them to cut it; depending on your style.
I always used to colour my hair at home and then I decided to have it coloured at the hairdressers; I am now back to doing it myself and it is much better.
I still go to the Hairdressers for the cut and blow.0 -
I don't know if this helps, but I have a half head of highlights about every 3 - 4 months, and in between I just have the roots a couple of inches either side of my parting, and the hairline done with a single colour, with about 4 foils along the parting to break the colour up. It costs about half the price of a half head, and makes it affordable, as well as not over processing my hair.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0

Second vote for colleges or local salons rather than chain - but also try gentle all-over colour rather than highlights? Much easier to do at home!

Also, ask around for friends and relatives who may be able to help. Sort of you-scratch-my-back-I'll-scratch-yours type of thing. For example, my mum sometimes dyes my hair for me as she gets more of an even result then I do when my hair gets a bit longer. For her I help her out here and there with random things she needs help.0
