P11D issued incorrectly for 11/12 is going to leave me with a whopping tax bill

You can call me stupid if you like but I'm only just finally getting round to doing my self assessment online this weekend. I put all my numbers in and pressed 'calculate' only to find I had a whopping £1,400 tax bill to pay by the end of the month.

After flapping and sweating for a while I narrowed down the error to my P11D which was issued last year by my employers. My Toyota Prius company car has been ticked as having no approved CO2 emissions figure which means that I'm being hit to the maximum possible level for tax on my SA. It should read 92.

The tax advisor told me to talk to my Payroll dept which I will do. But, my question is can they even re-issue or correct the P11D after its been issued ? And quickly, like sometime next week ? Or would I be within my rights to put the correct figure in myself and put a note on the form to explain ?

Put the correct figure in on the Tax Return and put an explanation in the explanatory notes section. Also, send a letter in to your Tax Office.

Then contact your Payroll dept. They are obliged to correct their mistakes in information provided to HMRC.

Agree the previous post. In fairness to your employers, back in 1997 there were only about 3 bits if data you needed to know to get company car tax right. Cue Labour and before long there were a mind-boggling number, as you have spotted one box missed can result in a missve change to the tax.

So company car tax is frequently messed up by employers. Let's face it if you are running a payroll or accounts function this is a low risk area normally covered by someone pretty junior.
