Self-employment at 'The Gym Group'

Cut-price gym 'The Gym Group' has a rather unusual (in my experience) way of providing staff.

Staff are self employed and do not get paid. But they can charge for personal training provided at the gym, and they set their own rates for this and do keep all the money that hey earn. The gym group also effectively provides advertising for them on the group's website. In return they must provide a certain number of hours per week of customer service and unpaid other work such as inductions.

I'm not sure what I think of this. It's not something that I would be doing myself, I'm just a gym member. Hence I'd like to hear what other people think of this . . . business arrangement.
