Downham Market - Snow this weekend?

Hi,

We're planning on viewing a load of properties in Downham Market tomorrow and Sunday. Coming quite a distance to see them. We're booked into the Ely Travelodge Saturday night.

Obviously no-one can totally predict the snow, but does anyone in that neck of the woods have any thoughts on whether we'll get there / be able to get about once we're there?
What's the place normally like when it snows? Does everything ground to a halt?

Most of the places we're going are within the town, but there's some we're hoping to see on Sunday afternoon in the villages west of the river. Are they likely to be a no-go?

Thanks,

Jim

In the absence of anyone 'in the know', I'd call the estate agent.

Hi, At the moment all the main roads are clear, there should be no problems getting from Ely to Downham. If you are looking at properties in Downham that should be fine but villages where the roads haven't been gritted could be a problem. Larger villages like Hilgay, Southery, Wimbotsham, Denver, Crimplesham are all fine on the main roads not sure about back roads. Had problems on a back road in Salters Lode on Thursday but you can park and walk to most places, just wrap up warm. Light snow expected all weekend. I think Savvy-Sue has the right idea call your estate agents and see how they are getting about. Hope you like the area, on the plus side it's looking even prettier at the moment!!

Charmed Interiors (on the way out of town past the station over the bridge and immediately on the right if you go past the big Sue Ryder you have gone too far) does a lovely light lunch/coffee/cakes when you fancy a meal or a warm up and is very nice and well priced as is Reeds coffee shop in town - but that does tend to get busy on Saturdays. Everywhere is closed on Sunday except Tesco and Morrisons!!

Yes, those people well known for telling the truth...
    ;)

Thanks for the local point of view, DianneB. That's pretty much as expected (and, to be fair, what the estate agent said!) so we should be fine.
We're travelling half way this evening. That looks like being the tricky bit.

:rotfl: yes, but if they suspect they won't be able to get you to the properties, it would pay them to be honest at this point!!!

I think it's also worth listening to local radio and consulting their websites, for the whole of your journey - that was a point made on our local radio this morning, that too many people set out without taking into account what things may be like further on.

It's looking like a "no" now.
It's got much worse here over the last hour. We're not setting off tonight.
Hoping we can still go first thing, but not too hopeful.

Look on the bright side - not many other people will be looking at 'your' properties this weekend. Hope you make it when the weather improves. It's a lovely part of the country, trust me I'm not an estate agent!!

It got better after I wrote my last post, so we made it in the end.
We found it was a really lovely town. Beautiful area (in the snow, at least!).
Saw a couple of places that we like, so now need to get on and sell ours...
