How do you know if a sofa will fit into your house?

Sorry - not sure if this is the best place to post.

How do you measure to see if a sofa will fit through your doors? I thought it was to measure diagonally, but I only have the height and width of the sofa, and the width and height of my doorway!

Height of sofa - 89cm
Width of sofa - 188cm
Depth of sofa - 99cm

Width of my doorway - 73cm
Height of my doorway - 200cm

Will it fit?!

Thanks!

    Ok for height anyway.

The diagonal you need to measure is from the base at the back to the bit where the arms join the back (a bit like you elbow, if you see what I mean). Theory is that you stand the sofa on edge (so 12cm height clearance), then shove it through back or front first and 'bend' it round the door. So the door width has to be bigger than the diagonal to allow a bit for the width of wall where the door-frame is.

Hope you can picture that - try it with a chair to get a better idea.

Hi I had heard similar to the dimensons ManAtHome quoted and this would generally work.

However our front door opens into a hallway the same width as doorframe with no leaverage to bend furniture around once part of it is inside.

Luckily we got over the problem by bringing it round the back and taking it through conservatory.

Could be a major problem tho if you are in a flat or small house with just one entrance.

Sofa could go round back through double doors, but its just getting through 2 "normal" sized doors then to get into the lounge. I have already ordered sofas (naughty for doing that before checking, I know!!!). I was going to go for 2 "large" sofas which are 220cm wide and decided against it...I'm so glad I made that decision! Thanks for info re "diagonal" measuring...I didn't really know what that meant.

So why don't they give that diagonal measurement when you are looking at buying sofas?

Another option that I have done a few times helping mates move house.

If you have double glazed windows you can remove the glass, put the sofa through the hole and replace the glass, it takes about 10 minutes to remove and put back in it also save you risking damageing your new sofa on the door frame or door ornaments. beware it takes 2 or 3 people to lift a large double glazed pane of glass.
