Email invoice hacking scam help

JimmyRedHead
JimmyRedHead Posts: 1 Newbie
Myself and a friend have just been the victim of an email hacking scam. :mad:We were sent an invoice from a ski chalet and then another one shortly afterwards (from the same email address) which said please see updated info re payment in attached invoice. We therefore paid the money to the account listed (direct debit). My bank say there is nothing they can do, I've reported it to Action Fraud, I've made a complaint to the Ombudsman and am now just at a total loss as to whether anything else is possible. My view is that the chalet should take the hit financially and accept our booking but I'm not sure they are going to do that. Can anyone advise?? Thanks

The reason Credit cars are so popular as a payment method.

Can you provide more information. As your email just appears as if someone sent you a invoice and you just paid them money.

    Whats makes it fraudulent?
Had you booked the chalet before you received the invoice?
You want the chalet to honour the booking, but you have involved the FOS. What result do you want?

No Direct Debit was involved - you used Bank Transfer, which has different rules, but basically once you make the transfer only the recipient and return it.

What is interesting, is that the same firm you were dealing with supposedly sent you an amended invoice which you paid? As a random fraud, this seems pretty incredible - and if your details were somehow compromised by the chalet firm, I agree - they should take the hit.

    Ask them:

    Has this happened before?
    How secure are bookings?

Where is the bank you paid and how similar to their 'real' bank?
