EU car sales fell 8.2% in 2012

EU new car registrations in the European Union fell by 8.2% in 2012, to the lowest level since 1995.

Of the major markets, the UK was the only one to grow, up 5.3% from 2011.

Germany's car sales dropped 2.9% in 2012 compared with the previous year.

Sales in Spain fell by 13.4%, in France by 13.9%, and in Italy by 19.9%, and in Greece by 40.1%.

Car registration are traditionally a very good indicator of economic cycle trends.

Now is the opportunity for the yes but brigade to make the case that this is not really good news at all and that the UK's problems are unique and it is actually doing worse than everybody else.

As part of this, and the world bank cutting growth forecasts / German growth forecasts cut, Spain has asked Germany (well, not specifically Germany, but it would be Germany doing it!) to not only provide money for bailouts, but also put direct stimulus into the PIGS countries.

Meanwhile, others are calling for the ECB to get back to normal monetry conditions, as the pace of debt seems to be increasing.

Germany, meanwhile, have had to formally cut their own growth forecasts, and look likely to enter recession themselves....in the meantime being asked to pay for stimulus for other countries. Can anyone imagine the UK sending taxpayer money into, for instance, French stimulus!? That's what Germany are being asked to do!

Anyone know if German Media is controlled by the way? I've seen some translations of todays headlines on the German economy / World bank forecasts, and they truly have to be applauded for the stance applied. Take for instance the world bank cutting growth forecasts for the EU. One paper reports "World bank suggests Euro crisis coming to an end".
  • The EU problems are off radar at the moment but I'm sure they will rear their ugly head again in the coming months.
Greece is plunging into a deeper and deeper mire. At some point all the can kicking will eventually rebound back with a vengence.

The economic figures for the Eurozone are now showing this. If Germany is showing economic weakness then look out the rest.

It's really good news that we have got more shiny tin on our roads. We all feel better now and can sleep easily in our beds safe in the knowledge that UK plc is leading the way.

Why is the shiny tin any less desirable or worthy than the electronic gadgets, downloaded movies and music, meals and drinks out, fashion clothing, elaborate kids' toys, gym subscriptions, holidays, new kitchens and bathrooms, home extensions, and all the manifold consumerist desires and aspirations that are tacitly referred to when people talk about standards of living falling, and times being hard ?

Didn't say they were, does the fact that tablet sales have soared indicate good news for the economy? Merely indicates the bucket is still leaking as fast as it ever was. When someone can work out how to get the tap turned back on then it will be a time to celebrate.

If we're looking for any GDP growth from anywhere, then the tablets count for as much as the cars, £ for £, and vice versa. The real benefit to the overall quality of life provided by various consumer goods can be argued, but maybe this is not the time. So sneering about cars, or tablets, is rather irrelevant in this situation. But to those who are desperate to see no recovery before the 2015 election, every piece of good news has to be sneered at, because they can't enthuse about it, so what else are they going to do ?
