Confused about petrol allowance for borrowed car

Hi,
I've looked through and not spotted my question - apologies if I have missed it here somewhere.
I've kept count of our business miles for filling in the tax form 2011-12... and have only kept a couple of the petrol receipts as I understood that I just needed to work out the mileage instead then claim 45p per mile (plus extra 5p for passenger).
We don't own the car, and instead borrow one from my Dad as we don't need it often/he doesn't use it often either, then refund him the petrol costs/fill up the car with petrol.
It's only about 2000 miles for the whole year, but a friend said we can't claim it as it's not our car... I've spent a while searching the HMRC but don't seem to be able to find the answer. If anyone here has been in a similar situation and can advise that would be brilliant.
Thanks in advance :j
