CIFAS - Does this affect obtaining credit?

I am FUMING!!!

I recently had a letter from Very who are a kind of mail order company saying my recent attempt to obtain credit had been declined. I hadn't made this application so called up to see what was going on. Turns out I was a victim of identity fraud so they added me to the CIFAS Register. They assured me this would not affect me getting credit.

Last week I decided to go for one of those long 0% credit cards that Halifax are offering to clear a couple credit cards I have. Despite having a PERFECT credit rating, meeting all the criteria, actually having my mortgage with Halifax, never missing a payment on anything in the history of my credit report I was still declined.

As you will all know they can never give you a reason why!:mad:

All I can assume is that it was this CIFAS marker on my credit report. If it is how can I get it removed ASAP??? It's supposed to be there to help protect the lenders but all it appears to do is shaft the innocent parties involved.

Apologies for the rant on my very first post, I'm not always like this! Honest :o

Yes cifas affects your ability to get credit however it should not stop you from getting it. All it means is that credit providers should carry out additional checks to varify you are who you say you are.

Ring CIFAS and talk to them about the type of CIFAS marker on your account.

It should be the one that protects you from further fraud but they might have managed to install the one that indicates that you committed fraud.

Ask a person in Halifax rather than on the phone to review the application once this is done.

You can apply for a subject access request from CIFAS to see what information is held on you. Despite you being the victim and it is hard to swallow, you're the one who has to do all the work, am afraid. The cost is £10 and the link is here. https://www.cifas.org.uk/secure/contentPORT/uploads/documents/Forms/External-SAR_Form.pdf

Then you can set about sorting out the marker and hopefully get it off your file.

These "couple of credit cards" how much is owing and how much do you earn?

Don't assume it was the CIFAS marker.
