Smokey Eyes

I have a big night out coming up soon and would love to have smokey eye make up however no matter how many tutorials I follow every time I try it I end up looking like someone's smacked me in the face with a brick!!
Is there anywhere I could go where they'd show me how to do it without either charging a fortune or piling on the pressure to buy loads of make up?

If you try department store counters they will generally do demos. Yes they will probably try to sell you some of the products afterwards but it's not usually 'hard sell' and I tend to say I want to see how it lasts/looks in daylight etc before coming back to buy.
Can I ask how you're doing it at the moment though? Are you using a lighter colour on the outer area? I tend to find a lot in is the blending as well, make sure you work the darker colour right into the crease of the eyelid.

It's all in the blending. I apply a thick line close to the lashes with a dark brown or black eyeliner pencil then blend, blend blend with a decent sized brush. Add more eyliner if needed, I was shown how to do it by a beauty therapist at a local salon.

Have a look on Youtube - there will be lots of tutorials on there on how to do smoky eyes and the kit you need.

I may be wrong but I also think Benefit do a smoky eyes kit that comes with instructions....

It is all in the blending, however, could you be using shades that are a teeny bit too dark for u? When I had a make over done, I opted for smokey eyes and they opted for colours that were lighter than I would have done them with.

My thoughts exactly. When I first got my Naked palette I went on YT and searched for Naked Palette Smoky Eyes and just followed the tutorial I most liked the look of.

I've noticed in a lot of smoky eye looks they actually use various shades of light-medium grey and avoid the dark colours completely. I don't think many people can carry off a very dark smoky eye.
  • I am sure there are probably lots of video tutorials on YouTube that you could watch that will show you how to do it, or perhaps ask someone in a department store for their advice. Perhaps buy some small item as a thank you though.

    Thanks all.

Have booked an appointment at the salon at our local college - it's free, the students get to practice on me and the lecturer is going to show me how to do it!

Indeed. My dd is one of the ones who can, can be quite jealous of it at times :rotfl: Especially the dark heavy eyeliner.
