really? they upgraded the postage on the item just to return it to you?

yes mr doubting thomas - they did the same to me!

looking at all the sarky comments do you perchance work for royal mail?
As to not collecting them and letting them be returned to the sender - this does assume that people put their return details on Christmas cards - which I find very rare.

My husband received notification from RM regarding an underpaid item, and as it was addressed to his business he went to the sorting office. Not being allowed to view prior to paying, he paid up to find a "Gentleman's Club" was offering their venue to him and his staff. His business' name is Model World - as in railways not shapely women.
I rang indignantly on his behalf and was finally offered a refund of the excess postage if I drove the 15 miles to collect it but not an apology for their mistake in sending unwanted(honestly!) and incorrectly paid literature to him.
When his suppliers make this mistake it's fine he just deducts it from his next invoice. It does seem that there are a number of innocent errors made due to the complexity of postal pricing which is astronomical. Why should a cars cost 72p to send a few miles but for another 50p or so it can fly to Australia, probably quicker.

Why are you paying anything when these idiots aren't getting it properly weighed up first at the post office?! I wouldn't get it redelivered - leave it and stuff them

I'd send a thank you card with 4 Large stamps inside, and explain that anything that isn't flat needs the bigger stamp, and also that I'm very happy to get 'flat' cards.

Does the Post Office still do a leaflet explaining the thickness issue?

Do you mean 'thickness' of the sender or the sent!

    Anyway, just bin the note.

We had problems where some distant family members sent stuff to our address for us to distribute to the local family members. I had to tell them to stop doing it, we were missing deliveries then had to pay to park up town to collect. Grrrr

In my area we have to go the sorting office not the post office and they can be quite nasty in there and won't let you even look at the envelope first to see if you want it. They make you pay first. I think the whole large letter thing is a rip off. I actually wrote to the Chairman of Clinton Cards once and asked why they made xmas cards in boxes just a fraction of normal size because people just didn't understand large letters. I suggested they put a big sticker on the boxes telling people they were large letter because lets face it, who actually looks on the back of a card to see the small print. Unfortunately he was not in the slightest bit interested

So you mean the help they give by marking the card for you isnt enough?

I have to go out of my way to the sorting office to pick up packages. I now only go if I have a red card for a missed delivery.

I had a card just before Christmas 2011 to say that there was an item with a surcharge. I was expecting a Christmas card from a 'friend', so thought that must have been it and didn't bother to collect it. She phoned after Christmas and apologised for not sending me a card. I have no idea what the item was - I certainly hope that it wasn't a competition win that hadn't been notified!

People still send Christmas cards? More to the point, people still use Royal Mail?

it's a tricky one - I would worry that I would look ungrateful if I said something, since they have been kind enough to send me a card/present in the first place. If you don't feel able to confront the issue with the people concerned, just don't collect the mail and it will get returned to the sender - they will then find out without you having to say anything!
But as I said in an earlier post this only works if there is a return address either on the back of the envelope or inside and I would guess that with most cards neither is there. Perhaps the Post Office should start a campaign to get people to do this.

    Royal Mail you mean?
That would be like the price in proportion changes 6+ years ago, that many still dont seem aware of.
many people struggle to get the basics of writing the to address right
